The organisers of the 46th State Schools Kalotsavam hoped to do away with unhealthy competition among participants by putting a stop to the practice of announcing the second and third prizes along with the first. This, however, has resulted in sharing of the first prize in a number of events. The Folk Dance (Boys) competition held at the main venue on Marine Drive on Monday set a record of sorts with three students sharing the first prize. Mithun Mohandas, MVMR HSS, Valayamkulam, Malappuram district; Shyam Kumar T.S., MGM EM HSS, Manathavadi, Wayanad district; and Rahul Murali, St. Aloystius HSS, Kollam shared the first prize. Mithun presented the anguish of a tribal man who had lost his land. He had also won a `B' grade in Kuchipudi (Boys). Shyamkumar, hailing from Wayanad district, depicted the Muthanga incident. He had won `A' grades in Bharathanatyam and Ottan Thullal also. Rahul, who had won the first prize in Folk Dance (Boys) last year, presented the Marad issue, told through a Laadaguru. The judges for the Boys' category included Kalamandalam Jayalakshmi, Kalamandalam Valsalakumari, Kalamandalam Ambili, Tripurasundari and RLV Ambika Venugopal. For the girls' section, apart from Ms. Tripurasundari and Ms. Ambika, there were Kalamandalam Mallika Vasudevan, Kalamandalam Ajitha Sreekumar and Kalamandalam Sreelatha Sajeevan.
