Minister denies income tax notice to Bachchan

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Film actor Amitabh Bachchan was not served any notice by the Income Tax Department when he was hospitalised recently, the Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, said here on Sunday.

Talking to the media on the sidelines of the Congress AICC plenary, Mr. Chidambaram said the department had served two notices on Mr. Bachchan. "He was hospitalised four days after the second one was served. No officer visited his house nor the hospital when he was sick and there was no effort to trouble him," he said.

Mr. Chidambaram further said filing of tax returns could become simpler leading to even virtual filing one day. E-filing in the long term would lead to this development, he said.

"The process is already simple. All that one has to do in the Saral form is to write `nil' if there is no tax to be paid," the Minister added.
