Letters to the Editor
The all-party meeting's endorsement of the Lok Sabha Speaker's assertion that he need not respond to the Supreme Court notice in respect of a case against the expulsion of the MPs involved in the cash-for-questions scam is unfortunate. It does not augur well for the rule of law in the country. It is true the judiciary, the executive, and the legislature are the three pillars on which the edifice of democracy rests. But parliamentarians should not forget that the apex court has the right to declare even a law passed by the legislature as ultra vires if it violates the spirit of the Constitution.
V.V.S. Mani,
S. Prakash,
The all-party meeting's action amounts to showing disrespect to the Supreme Court, though political parties and jurists may differ.
Parliament may have wide powers, but when the Supreme Court has admitted a petition challenging the exercise of such powers by the Speaker and has issued notice, the proper course would be to respond to it.
B. Kousalya,
True to forecasts, a war between two pillars of our democracy Parliament and the judiciary has begun. The outcome is anybody's guess but the judiciary appears to be on firm ground. One hopes this confrontation will end soon.
R.K. Menon,
