Adams holds Anand; Topalov moves ahead

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand settled for a 23-move draw with an in-form Michael Adams before joint overnight leader Veselin Topalov moved ahead for the first time by beating Ivan Sokolov in the seventh round of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, near Amsterdam, on Saturday.

Topalov, who caught up with Anand in spite of being held by Sergei Tiviakov on Saturday, now has five points. At 4.5 points, Anand shares the second spot with Sergey Karjakin. who defeated twice World junior champion Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.

Defending champion Peter Leko scored his first victory at the expense of last-man Gata Kamsky, who stunned Anand in the previous round.

In GM `B', K. Humpy (3) crashed to a second straight defeat when she surrendered to top seeded Czech David Navara in 41 moves. On Saturday, Humpy had surrendered to Dutch Erwin L'Ami. Norway's wonder-kid Magnus Carlsen defeated Giovanni Vescovi to lead with six points.

Eighth round pairings: Topalov-Gelfand; Bacrot-Anand; Sokolov-Kamsky; Adams-Leko; Wely-Ivanchuk; Mamedyarov-Aronian; Tiviakov-Karjakin.
