Muzumdar's knock not enough for Mumbai

MUMBAI: Uttar Pradesh arrived on the doorstep of victory in the Ranji Trophy Elite semifinal against former champion Mumbai, needing 175 runs in the second innings with two days in hand. The visitors, chasing a target of 214 after restricting the host to 264 on day three at Wankhede, knocked off 39 runs for the loss of opener Praveen Kumar's wicket.

Mumbai's anticipated fightback fell short of expectations, the batsmen lasting just 79 overs on a firm wicket. Four wickets fell for 48 runs in the first 90 minutes, leaving experienced Amol Muzumdar and Ramesh Powar taking charge of situation.

The two adopted own methods to counter-attack, Muzumdar watchful and selective in strokeplay, Powar brutal and exploding into breathtaking shots.

Muzumdar's 50 came up in 93 balls (142 minutes, 7x4) and consolidated Mumbai's response with a 199-run partnership with Powar. UP's frown turned to delight when wicketkeeper Amir Khan grabbed the first chance offered by the aggressive all-rounder off Praveen Kumar, Powar paying for no-holds-barred approach after 41 (six fours, 108 balls). Mumbai's worry turned to horror as Muzumdar went 10 runs later, claimed by Piyush Chawla.
