Aravinda Shastri, Gahan triumph

MANGALORE: Aravinda Shastri of Bangalore and Gahan M.G. of Mangalore won the open and under-12 crowns respectively in the State-level rapid chess tournament, organised by the Karnataka State Chess Association here on Sunday. While Aravinda's better progressive helped him win the open crown, Gahan pipped Girish Kaushik of Mysore in a tie-breaker for the under-12 title.

Aravinda and Vikram Saralaya of Udupi both finished with 8 points from nine rounds. Gopalkrishna Bhat of Sullia (7) pipped Vijendra Y.G. (7) of Mysore to the third place. on a better progressive. Gahan (7.5) beat Girish (7.5) in a tie-breaker 1.5-0.5 to win the under-12 title. Vivekananda (7) of Mysore and Pranav (7) of Shimoga finished third and fourth respectively in this category.

Ananya Madiyal was declared the best woman player of the meet, while Viona D'Cunha and Kaushik were declared the best junior girl and junior boy of the two-day event respectively. — Staff Reporter
