Haneefa dead, leaves behind an immortal fictional character

Staff Reporter

Beypore Sultan's brother has a main role in `Pathummayude Aadu'

KOTTAYAM: Haneefa, one of the key characters in the famous Malayalam novel Pathummayude Aadu, is dead.

Haneefa, younger brother of the novelist, the late Vaikom Mohammed Basheer, was one of the pivotal characters in the biographical novel, which centres on his sister Pathumma and her indulgent and irrepressible goat, which, ultimately, eats the creative works of the author.

In the story, Haneefa, often, appears as a youngster who always burns his fingers in petty trade and tries to wriggle out of the financial crisis by fleecing his mother, playing up her far about his joining the Army. In real life, Haneefa was a tailor who, later, started his own tailoring business.

Haneefa also appears in another story by Basheer, Aanapooda.

The 88-year-old Haneefa had been bed-ridden for the past few years and was staying at his Puthen Kanjar House at Mannar, near Kaduthuruty.

He could not attend the commissioning of the Paalamkadavu bridge at Thalayolaparambu the other day, though it was a sentimental moment for the family, as it was named after `Beypore Sultan' himself.

A widower, he leaves behind six children. His funeral was held at the Juma Masjid at Aappanchira.
