Chennai: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala went on a shopping spree on Saturday at a fair organised by the IAS Officers' Wives Association to raise funds for HIV/AIDS affected children. Mr. Barnala visited each of the 37 stalls and picked up several handcrafted items to give as gifts: Intricate Tanjore paintings, Madhubani art work, handloom shirts and crafted boxes containing tea-bags. He also bought hand-embroidered salwar-kameez material for his daughter and a set of 1,000 printed greeting cards with drawings by tsunami affected children in Nagapattinam and Cuddalore. The fair was held at SAF games village. Proceeds from the fair, which concluded on the same day, would go to an orphanage for children affected by HIV/AIDS or had been orphaned as their parents were affected. "The fair is part of our social service programme through which we help the disadvantaged," Usha Selvam, secretary of the IAS Officers' Wives Association said. The association members became enterprising businesswomen at the fair. Glass paintings by Kuntal Kumar, wife of IGP (Intelligence) Sanjeev Kumar, were a big hit. Her glass paintings featured Lord Ganesha, abstract art and flowers. Prices ranged from Rs. 200 to Rs. 800. Ceramic art work and pot decoration by Anvita, wife of IPS officer Ashutosh Shukla, was also popular. Madhubani paintings obtained from Orissa were sold by Rashmi Rajeev, wife of Govenor's ADC Rajeev Kumar.
