CUDDALORE: Union Minister for Communications Dayanidhi Maran has promised to consider setting up an information technology park here. He was responding to the demand made by Minister of State for Law K. Venkatapathi, and Ela.Pugazhendi and M.R.K. Panneerselvam, MLAs, at a function held on Saturday. Mr. Maran, who inaugurated the Cuddalore divisional postal office building, constructed at a cost of Rs 43 lakhs, and DoT software of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, said Cuddalore had a long history of postal communication, dating to 1850 when the then South Arcot district established regular contacts with Chennaipattinam. Mr. Maran said that after he took over as Communication Minister, he computerised the Department of Post to improve customer services. Now, postmen were given the additional duty of collecting postal articles and vending stamps at the doorsteps of customers. The postmen who had earlier returned with empty bags were now carrying back a voluminous bundle. Because of their dedicated services, the people held the department in high esteem. The postal employees should get ready to face the competition by improving their services. The DoT software would offer integrated customer services, such as billing and booking complaints. Director-General of Department of Posts U. Srinivasa Raghavan said the department now stepped into its 151st year of service. It was adopting modern technologies to reach new heights. Mr. Pugazheni said the proposed information technology park could be set up in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate near Cuddalore. Mr. Panneerselvam said it could come up at Vadalur (falling in his Kurinjipadi constituency). Mr. Venkatapathi said the park was needed in the district. Vatsala Raghu, Principal Chief Postmaster General; K. Sridhara, Chief General Manager, BSNL, Tamil Nadu Circle; and K. Ramalingam, Superintendent of Post Offices, Cuddalore division, attended the function.
