Public hearing on Bt Cotton slams Centre

Government asked to pay ex-gratia to all families of farmers who have committed suicide

  • Dragging Mahyco- Monsanto to MRTPC will not solve the problems faced by farmers
  • The jury takes note of the problems with Bt Cotton and economic losses suffered by farmers

HYDERABAD: The jury at a daylong public hearing on Bt Cotton has slammed the Central Government for approving it without proper scientific field trials and suggested its immediate cancellation.

It also feels that the State Government's decision to drag the Mahyco- Monsanto to Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission (MRTPC) will not solve the problems faced by farmers. Instead, the jury wants cancellation of the marketing licence of the company and pro-active enforcement of regulations. The jury of the public hearing organised by Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) here on Saturday comprised Justice B.S.A. Swamy, former Judge of AP High Court, K. R. Chowdhary, member of Farmers' Welfare Commission, V. Hanumantha Rao, senior journalist, S. Malla Reddy of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangam and Kodandaram, human rights activist.
