`Reconstitute town master plans'

Existing town development plans outdated, says experts

KOZHIKODE: The Graduates Association of Civil Engineers (Grace), Calicut Chapter, has demanded that the existing town development master plans be renewed or reconstituted in view of the fact that these have become outdated.

Vineesh Vidyadharan, president of grace, said in a press release that changes have taken place in the different industrial-commercial-and agriculture zones, and, under the circumstances, a change in the town development master plan was inevitable.

Until such changes were brought about in the master plan, the regulations must be amended suitably to enable the respective District Collectors to provide zonal exemption in specific cases.

With fast paced development, the master plans prepared by Town Development authorities earlier were not being implemented as planned, it was pointed out.

The construction of bypass roads, widening of existing roads, and the growth of industrial units by roadsides have all changed the existing master plan stipulations.

Often what was demarcated as agriculture land has not been maintained as such.

With scattered development in a State such as Kerala, the civil engineers association has suggested the participation of people while renewing town development master plan.
