TIRUPATI : With only a few days to go for the launch of the Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, the district administration is gearing up itself for its implementation. Chittoor is one of the 13 districts in the State identified for implementing the scheme under which Rs.100 crores each is being provided to the districts with the twin objective of providing employment to rural hands and in the process help villages augment their basic minimum amenities like drinking water and sanitation. The Government has issued guidelines to district officials on the types of works to be taken up under the scheme.
Exercise begins
In the run-up to the scheduled launch of the scheme on February 2, Collector S.S. Rawat is busy interacting with officials and beneficiaries. The district is likely to get a flood of funds this fiscal under various schemes. In addition to the Rs.100 crores being released under the Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, it is also likely to get the same amount under the Velugu scheme for disbursement as Community Development Fund to rural unemployed women besides Rs.30 crores under Indira Kranthi Pathakam for watershed programmes. Meanwhile, steps are afoot to set up 18 bulk milk-chilling plants in the district with a total financial outlay of Rs. 2 crores before the end of February.
