Technical symposium

KOLLAM: Professor M.K.A. Hameed memorial national symposium for engineering students, Mexsym `06, will be held at TKM College of Engineering here from January 23 to 25. The technical symposium organised by the Mechanical Engineering Department of the college will be inaugurated by R.V. Perumal, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, ISRO. At the inaugural function, to be presided over by the president of the TKM Trusts, Shahal Hassan Musaliar, the managing director of the Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited, K.P. Rajendran, will inaugurate the in-house exhibition of the symposium.The valedictory function on January 25 will be inaugurated by S. Ramakrishnan, the project director of GSLV MK 111, Vikram Sarabai Space Centre. The function will be presided over by the principal of the TKM College of Engineering, M.C. Philipose. The treasurer of the TKM Trusts, T.K. Jalaluddin Musaliar, will distribute the prizes.

Green media workshop at Nilambur

NILAMBUR: The `Little Masika' will organise a State-level media workshop from February 3 for journalists and students who specialise in environmental issues. The three-day residential workshop titled Green Media will be held at Chaliyar View, Chandakunnu, in association with the Forest Department. Sebastian Paul, MP, and E.P. Easa, director of the Wild Life Trust of India, will be among the resource persons to conduct the workshop. The workshop will discuss whether the Indian mass media fulfil their role in protecting the environment. Those wishing to take part in the workshop have to register themselves before January 30, said Biju John, editor of the `Little Masika,' an environmental magazine published from here. IT festival

KOCHI: The computer department of the Rajagiri School of Computer Science is conducting an information technology festival, IT Euphoria, from January 23 to 25 on the Kalamasserry campus of the institution. Minister for Public Works M.K. Muneer will inaugurate the event.

The festival consists of various IT-related competitions like coding, quiz, word hunt, web designing, marketing and cultural competitions. — Staff Reporter

IBP scheme for customers

KOCHI: The retail outlet dealers of IBP Company Limited has introduced a bumper prize scheme at 14 petrol pumps in Ernakulam and Alappuzha districts with effect from January 15 to April 14.

Prize coupons will be issued to those customers filling Rs.200 worth of petrol or Rs.300 worth of diesel from any of these outlets. There are three mega prizes and 150 consolation prizes. — Staff Reporter

Teachers' strike

on January 24

Thiruvananthapuram: Teachers affiliated to National School Teachers Union (NSTU), Kerala, would resort to strike on January 24 demanding wage revision and sanctioning of DA arrears among other things.

The decision to resort to strike was taken at the State committee meeting of the NSTU, a release issued by general secretary S. Prasanth said. - Staff Reporter

Hartal at Kodungalloor

Thrissur: A hartal will be observed at Kodungalloor, near here, on Monday by the Communist Party of India in protest against the attack on its mandalam committee office by suspected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers. Youth Congress yatra

KOTTAYAM: The Kerala March being undertaken by Youth Congress State president K.P. Anil Kumar will enter the district on Monday. According to the Youth Congress leaders G. Gopakumar and Joshy Philip, the yatra will enter the district at Nella Paara on Monday afternoon. The march will pass through Pala, Kidangoor, Ayarkunnam and Kottayam during the next three days and move on to Alappuzha district on January 26. The senior Congress leaders Ramesh Chennithala and Vayalar Ravi, Chief Minster Oommen Chandy and his Cabinet colleagues will address various meetings scheduled during the yatra, leaders said. — Staff Reporter

Changankulangara, won the first and second prizes, respectively, in the upper primary category of a quiz programme conducted by a cultural organisation, Chilla, at Ochira on Sunday. In the lower primary category, the first prize was won by S. Hema of NNM UP School, Kappil and the second prize by Mohammed Amin of SRV UP School, Changankulangara. — Staff Reporter

Memorial meet

MALAPPURAM: Tributes were paid to M.C. Varghese, the former chief editor of Mangalam daily, here on Saturday. Muslim Youth League president Syed Sadik Ali Shihab Thangal inaugurated the function. Minister for Public Works M.K. Muneer delivered the memorial lecture. District panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed presided.
