Warning on sore throat

NEW DELHI: Sore throat, if ignored, in children can cause problems of the joints and the heart, the Delhi Medical Association and the Heart Care Foundation of India have warned.

Addressing a cardiac workshop here over the weekend, DMA president K. K. Aggarwal said a particular type of sore throat caused by a bacteria called streptococcus can cause migratory joint pains with or without swelling and can cause involvement of the heart leading to permanent damage to its one or more valves.

However, he said every sore throat was not bacterial and every bacterial sore throat is not streptococcal in origin. "In over 90 per cent of cases sore throats are viral in origin and need no antibiotics, `' he added.

Sports day

NEW DELHI: The sports day of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Mehta Vidyalaya was celebrated with much enthusiasm on Saturday. Kicking off with a march-past, the children of Class XI took part in an oath-taking ceremony.

Well-known former cricketer Madan Lal was the chief guest on the occasion. Apart from displaying their athletic abilities, the children also performed various colourful drills. Mr. Lal gave away prizes to the winners.

Exhibitions

NEW DELHI: Business worth Rs. 428 crores was generated at the Indian Furnishings, Floorings and Textiles Expo'06 and the Indian Fashion Jewellery and Accessories Show'06 that concluded at the India Expo Centre and Mart in neighbouring Greater Noida over the weekend.

According to organisers, both exhibitions, held for the first time, were a great success in terms of turnover of buyers and quantum of business generated.

One of the reasons for the success was that there were 2,200 foreign buyers. Special scheme

NEW DELHI: Appu Ghar has been organising "Defence Week" as a regular event since the past few years in honour of defence personnel. On the occasion of the 59th Republic Day also Appu Ghar is organising a special event for defence personnel.

On the anvil is a special scheme wherein the ticket for the rides at Appu Ghar will be available at a special price of Rs. 50 per person as against a normally priced ticket of Rs. 150 per person.

The scheme will be valid up to February 5 from 12 noon to 8 p.m.

The scheme is for all defence personnel, serving and retired, including the paramilitary personnel and their families.

To avail of the facility, visitors will have to carry identity cards for authentication.
