MANGALORE: There is a need for communication on vital issues of sexuality with teenagers and adolescents, W. Linda Christy, Joint Director, Department of Collegiate Education and Director, College Development Council, Mangalore University, has said. Dr. Christy was inaugurating a health awareness camp for National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of colleges affiliated to Mangalore University as part of Yuva Saptaha 2006 here on Sunday. Teenagers and adolescents make most vital decisions of their life during this phase. It is important for them to share information learnt at such camps with their peers. Gynaecologist Padmini Prasad, who is the resource person for the camp, said there are many phobias, myths and misconceptions associated with sexuality. While parents are not comfortable answering questions on sex from their children, it is important to give them right perspective on the issue. This need for information, assurance, counselling and guidance is all the more heightened with increase in the number of AIDS cases. St. Agnes College principal Carmel Rita said there is need for students to be exposed to all facets of life, and value-based education system should help prepare them find answers to their questions. Gopal, Coordination Officer, NSS, Mangalore University, welcomed the gathering. Charles Pais, NSS officer of St. Agnes College was present. Wilma D'Souza, NSS volunteer, proposed a vote of thanks. More than 200 women students from 28 colleges of Mangalore University attended the camp.
