Commemorative stamp on Meiyappan released

CHENNAI: Speakers including DMK president M. Karunanidhi and Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran paid glowing tributes to film personality, the late A.V. Meiyappan, for his great contributions to the world of cinema.

Mr.Karunanidhi released a commemorative postage stamp on the late Meiyappan, while film producer and Meiyappan's son M. Saravanan received the first album.

Mr. Maran said the late Meiyappan's life was an example to the dictum, "perseverance has its reward".

During the last 18 months, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government had brought out commemorative stamps on five noted personalities--Murasoli Maran, K. Subramanyam, S.S. Vasan, M.S. Subbulakshmi and Meiyappan, --who were connected with the Tamil film world. The Postal Department would shortly bring out a commemorative stamp on Tamil film star Gemini Ganesan, he said.

The commemorative stamps were part of the UPA Government to honour great personalities belonging to different walks of life to perpetuate their memory in the minds of the people. The Government's effort would also enable the youth to draw inspiration from their life and works, Mr. Maran noted.

Mr. Karunanidhi recalled his long association with the AVM Studios, which was celebrating its diamond jubilee this year. The late Meiyappan was known for expressing his views without fear or favour. Meiyappan, who purchased the rights of Bharatiyar's songs from another company, had also helped the government to nationalise them.

He asked Mr. Maran to make efforts to issue a commemorative stamp in honour of Tamil scholar, U.V. Swaminatha Aiyar, to mark his 150th birth anniversary on February 19. Mr. Maran had told him that the Postal Department would bring out stamps in honour of film personalities L.V. Prasad and Nagi Reddy.

Founder of M.G.R. Kazhagam R.M. Veerappan and film personalities including K. Balachander, S.A. Chandrasekara, Vaali, Vairamuthu, Manorama, Sathyaraj, Parthiban, Vivek and Sivaji Ramkumar also felicitated.
