Chennai: Minister for Information Technology D. Jayakumar launched an additional mobile health clinic of the Isha Foundation here on Sunday. The 16 mobile health clinics functioning under the Action for Rural Rejuvenation (ARR) cover 13,50,000 people in 1,400 villages of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. They are covering over 64 villages on the outskirts of Chennai. The Minister highlighted the success of post-tsunami rehabilitation in Tamil Nadu. Non-governmental organisations played a great role in the rejuvenation work. "I was impressed by the work done by the mobile dispensary during my visit through Royapuram," the Minister said. He assured the Foundation that the Government would join hands to work for the people and extend all its support. Initiated in August 2003, the ARR focuses on comprehensive rural development using innovative approaches towards health, independent sustainability of project components and self-reliance of rural communities. "While the project addresses practical public health and economic realities of rural life, its main focus is to renew the human spirit," said Vinod Hari project co-ordinator.
Treatment at the doorstep
He said teams of health workers provide free treatment at the doorstep of villagers. Project Green Hands, an ecological initiative under the ARR, had planted 1,26,000 saplings, including 13,000 in Chennai. Novelist Pattukottai Prabhakar, actor Vivek and Bengal Tiger Line managing director P. Sridhar participated.
