TAMBARAM: As part of making "ramyamaana (beautiful) Ramapuram" a reality, residents of this western suburb on Sunday vowed to take up zero waste management on a large scale as indiscriminate burning of garbage was one of the pressing problems . At the first meeting of "Citizens Voice" - organised by the Exnora International to make people come out their grievances--residents from various localities such as Kurinji Nagar, Moogambikai Nagar, Vivekananda Nagar and Raghavendra Nagar among others, said they would strive towards making Ramapuram a model area. As part of this, every household would earnestly start working towards zero waste management--segregating domestic waste and hurling very little garbage in the open. Members of the different welfare associations repeatedly stressed on the importance of residents coming together to devise the means to arrive at a solution for their problems. During the open forum, residents said indiscriminate burning of garbage and cremation of bodies in public places was the curse. Pointing out that the suffering was beyond description, they wondered why the government agencies were not taking any steps to earmark a portion of land for burial ground. Further, heaps of plastic waste and garbage had taken over open spaces and also threatened to wipe out the few water bodies there. Residents said the streets and roads were in a pathetic condition and no improvement was carried out in a long time. The problem of traffic congestion on the roads leading to the Mount-Poonamallee Road and K.K. Nagar were never addressed to, residents said. Further, the Bharathi Salai, one of the crucial links with Ramapuram and the rest of the city was in complete shambles, they added. Some of them regretted that bus services were erratic.
