Thiruvananthapuram: A four-lane, 25-metre wide road would be available for motorists from Neeramankara to Killipalam, one of the busiest stretches of the National Highway 47 passing through the capital city, with the commissioning of the second stretch of the Killipalam bridge this month. Work on the second stretch of the two-lane bridge at Killipalam is nearing completion and only the minor works are to be competed. "The surfacing, construction of median and painting work are to be taken up and the bridge is to be thrown open soon," a senior official of the PWD (NH) wing, told The Hindu . The authorities had already commissioned the first phase of the four-lane Killipalam bridge and traffic from Karamana to the city and back are being diverted through the new bridge. The second stretch has been constructed where the 80-year-old bridge existed. The Killipalam bridge has two spans each of 14.5 metres. The total width of the two bridges is 22 metres, which includes 8.5 metres carriageway, a centre median of one metre and a footpath of two metres. The encroachment by over half-a-dozen shopkeepers in the "poramboke" land near the bridge is another hurdle being faced by the authorities. The PWD has approached the district authorities to demarcate the Government land. "After the land is demarcated by the district administration, one reach of the bridge would be extended on the hospital side and the railings would be demolished", the official said. Meanwhile, the authorities have worked out a proposal to widen the carriageway from Killipalam to Thycaud flyover of the NH 47. The proposal is pending with the Chief Engineer.
