Ramadoss poser to Government on cable network takeover

Special Correspondent

"Why it did not apply the yardstick of public welfare with regard to private self-financing colleges"

CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi on Monday asked the State Government why it did not apply the yardstick of public welfare with regard to private self-financing colleges and deemed universities.

Referring to the Government's move to take over cable television network citing the principle, S. Ramadoss, party founder, contended that several colleges and deemed universities were "law unto themselves." They were collecting the fee exorbitantly. "Can it be said that no complaints have been received? Can it be argued that there is no public interest involved in this issue?" Dr. Ramadoss asked.

He said it sounded "ridiculous" when the Government, instead of focussing on an issue that concerned a large number of students, chose to target some private cable TV operators. "It is undisputable that only political motives and interests other than public welfare are involved in this unilateral action of the State Government. If it is not so, is the State Government ready to bring in a law immediately to take over self-financing colleges and deemed universities that indulge in extracting exorbitant fee and throwing to the winds the government's rules on communal reservation?"
