Vaiko seeks change in calamity fund norms
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI
: Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to modify the National Calamity and Contingency Relief Fund (NCCRF) and release the funds sought by the Tamil Nadu Government in the wake of the rains and floods in the State in 2005.
In a letter to Dr. Singh, Mr.Vaiko said the worst affected were farmers whose crops and cultivable lands had been totally damaged. Adequate financial assistance should be given to them.
He said as per the present NCCRF guidelines only Rs.1,000 would be paid per acre for irrigated areas, Rs.300 per acre for rain-fed areas and Rs.1600 per acre for long-term crops. Unless a minimum of Rs.8,000 per acre for paddy, Rs.10,000 per acre for sugarcane and banana, and Rs.12,000 per acre for long-term crops was sanctioned, the farmers could not recover from the loss they had suffered.
