Accused cannot be brought to special court, says CBI

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam told a Special Court here that the chances of producing in court three key accused, including Abdul Karim Telgi, who is lodged in a Pune prison, was remote.

"The possibility of producing them here is remote," Jacob Daniel, Special Public Prosecutor, told Special Judge P. Dakshinamoorthy adding that the CBI had requested the Tamil Nadu Government to install video conferencing facility in the CBI court itself.

The three persons — A. Nizamuddin, Abdul Karim Telgi and Abdul Wahid — are lodged in the Pune Central Prison at present.

When the matter was taken up on Monday morning, the CBI counsel submitted copies of the charge sheet, and said efforts would be made to conduct the court proceedings through video-conferencing at the next hearing.

On his part, the Judge said he would verify the copies before furnishing them to the accused. He then posted the matter to February 23 for further proceedings. Of the 11 accused seven, including the suspended Deputy Inspector-General of Police, A.P. Mohamed Ali, were present in court while the seventh accused Peter Kennedy could not be produced. He is imprisoned in the Chennai Central Prison.

Meanwhile, allowing a plea from Mr. Ali, the Judge relaxed a bail condition requiring the suspended DIG from appearing before the investigating agency periodically.
