NEW DELHI: In what is turning out to be a mystery for the police, some businessmen of a particular locality in South Delhi have been receiving threat letters demanding money in lakhs from them. While the police suspect it to be the handiwork of novices, they are not taking any chances. Police sources said more than a couple of businessmen based in and around Kalkaji have informed the police about the letters in which the senders demanded money to the tune Rs. 20 lakhs. Usually, the businessmen are threatened with letters that arrive one after the other over a period of time. While the first letter is introductory in tone, in the second letter the senders ask the businessmen to carry out a certain instruction to ascertain if their instructions were being followed. In the next letter, the unidentified men tell the businessman to reach a certain place following a particular route and deliver the money. A couple of businessmen have also told the police that they felt that they were being trailed though they had nothing concrete to prove the same. What has increased the problems of the police is that nobody turned up to collect the money when a businessman followed a particular route to reach a certain place. Sources added that the men trying to extort money might be becoming aware of the police presence. So far, the police suspect that first timers might be involved in sending these letters. Sources further added that as and when the police take up investigations against such complaints, the letters stop arriving. These letters also stopped coming to businessmen who did not respond and refused to pay up. The police believe that the modus operandi could only be of novices who were probably taking shots in the dark.
