Awareness of AIDS got her a ticket to Singapore

Ramya Kannan

CHENNAI: A little learning can take you far, even as far as Singapore: the way it did for Tharuna Hinduja.

Tharuna from Chennai learnt a few facts, answered 10 questions and beat several contestants to win the "Learn, Win and Fly Contest" and two tickets to Singapore.

Of course, her credit also lies in referring the maximum number of people to the infosite and the contest.

Conducted by Galatta.com, webmaster for the Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society site, and a movie portal, the contest aimed at generating awareness of HIV/AIDS on the Internet and mobile platforms.

The promotional campaign was carried out, well in advance of the actual contests, on the sites of Galatta, Yahoo, Sify, Rediff, Sysindia and 55 city portals, Airtel and BSNL.

The people at Galatta claim that the campaign generated a viewership of over 32.4 lakhs, roughly one per cent of whom those who visited www.aidsfreetn.com (the website of TANSACS) during the campaign period, between November 16 and December 15, 2005.

While there was token participation from some NRIs, the bulk of the participants, 64 per cent, were from Chennai.

The contest zone, created on the website, required participants to answer a series of 10 questions related to HIV/AIDS, with multiple choice answers and clues provided at the site.

Participants would have to get all the answers right, and refer the contest to their friends to be eligible for prizes.

Apart from providing information about AIDS, `Learn, Win and Fly' also had some exciting prizes that, no doubt, had held their own magnetic attraction for Net users.

Apart from the Singapore trip, microwave ovens, DVD players, movie tickets and T-shirts were up for the taking.

With the contest concluding much to everyone's satisfaction, it was prize-giving time on January 7.

Actors Jeeva and Ramesh distributed the goodies to the winners of the contest at Coffee? on Greenways Road.
