BANGALORE: Cable operators from different parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Monday urged the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) not to allow the proposed clubbing of pay television channels and instead, go in for pricing of individual channels. Participating in an Open House Discussion on "The Consultation Paper on the proposal for amendment to the tariff order of October 1, 2005, relating to Broadcasting Services" here, the operators said viewers will not be interested in paying for channels that are yet to become popular. Besides, the clubbing of channels was against the provisions of the MRTP Act, they pointed out. They contended that broadcasters, even those who were rivals, often joined hands to cut off links to cable operators. They wanted TRAI to address these issues at the earliest. TRAI chairman Pradeep Baijal said the cable operators' problems should be addressed institutionally.
Mechanism
Some mechanism should be worked out soon, he said. Among the participants were TRAI member D.P. Seth, advisor, Broadcasting and Cable Services, Rakesh Kacker, representatives from the Federation of Cable Operators India and several cable operators from Davangere, Kollegal and other parts of the State.
