Staff Reporter

IN MEMORY OF A PIONEER: Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri delivering Kalamandalam Hyderali memorial lecture at Chembai Memorial Government Music College in Palakkad.

Palakkad: Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri, a close associate of the late Kalamandalam Hyderali, who died in a car accident recently, has said that passing away of the singer is an irreparable loss to Kathakali music.

Delivering a Kalamandalam Hyderali memorial lecture at Chembai Memorial Government Music College here on Sunday, Mr. Embranthiri said a chapter in the history of Kathakali music had ended with the death of the pioneering Kathakali musician.

He said both of them worked together for more than 30 years at FACT Udyogamandal Kathakali School and toured many parts of the country to perform. The strong bond of friendship remained till Hyderali's death. Hyderali was a versatile artist. He had deep knowledge of Carnatic and Hindustani music, which helped him become a maestro of Kathakali music, Mr. Embranthiri added.

Speaking at the memorial meeting, S. Narayanan Namboodiri of All India Radio, Thrissur, said that with the death of Hyderali, Kathakali had lost a born genius, who gave it so much with his aesthetically conceived innovations, enriching the dance form without robbing it of classical purity.

Kalamandalam Kshemavathi, Mohiniyattam maestro, in her speech, highlighted the music composing skills of Hyderali.

Rich tributes were paid to the artiste by N. Radhakrishnan Nair, former Secretary, Kerala Kalamandalam.

The meeting was followed by a music concert by Embranthiri.
