Janata Dal(S) bags Afsalpur TP posts

Special Correspondent

  • AIPJD has won posts in Surpur taluk
  • Elections to Jewargi Taluk Panchayat have been postponed

GULBARGA: Janata Dal (Secular) has bagged the key posts in Afsalpur Taluk Panchayat. With this, the party has cornered four of the ten taluk panchayats in the district.

The Congress party has retained power in Chincholi, taking the number of taluk panchayats won by it to four. All-India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) has won the posts in Surpur taluk. Elections to Jewargi Taluk Panchayat have been postponed.

Official sources said here on Tuesday that Raju Veerabhadrappa who represents Bhandarawad constituency is president and Shamrao J. Patil vice-president of Afsalpur Taluk Panchayat. Both of them were unanimously elected. The posts of president and vice-president were reserved for `general' and Backward Classes `A' categories respectively. In Chincholi, Congress-backed Independent Shamrao, who represents Salagar Basantpur, is president and Veerashetty of the Congress who represents Degalmadi constituency vice-president. Both of them were unanimously elected. While the post of president was reserved for Scheduled Castes, that of vice-president was set aside for the `general' category.

Janata Dal (Secular) has gained control in Gulbarga, Afsalpur, Shahapur, and Chitapur taluk panchayats and is likely to win Surpur Taluk Panchayat too since there are indications that all AIPJD members will join Janata Dal (Secular).

In the last elections, the Congress came to power in all the 10 taluk panchayats in the district. The party won Gulbarga Taluk Panchayat with the help of BJP. But in three other taluk panchayats, it had a clear majority.

The Congress has now managed to come to power in Chincholi, Yadgir, Sedam and Aland taluk panchayats. It is not sure of its chances in Jewargi Taluk Panchayat. Sources said the date of elections to Jewargi Taluk Panchayat has not yet been finalised. The State Election Commission has issued directives to the Returning Officer to hold elections before January 31. The election was postponed following a protest by BJP members over the procedure followed by the Returning Officer.
