GULBARGA: At last, 71-year-old artist Kishan Rao S. Sarode has got recognition from the State Government, which has selected him for the 2004-05 Honorary Award of the Karnataka Lalithkala Academy.

Mr. Sarode, who is one of the few artists from the region to get a diploma in drawing and painting from J.J. School of Arts of Mumbai, has been keeping a low profile.

His lack of communication skills and poverty prevented him from holding even a single painting exhibition.

Mr. Sarode, who got diploma in drawing and painting under the guidance of Dandavati Mutt in 1958-59, has to his credit hundreds of paintings, including portraits, designs, landscape paintings, pictorial composition and devotional paintings. Most of these works, including breathtaking landscapes, true to life portraits and devotional paintings were lost in a fire accident in the makeshift gallery in his ancestral house in Gulbarga in late 1960s.

"This was one of the reasons why I could not hold painting exhibitions. Whatever collection I have now has been painted after the fire accident," said Mr. Sarode.

Mr. Sarode, who passed the lower and higher grade drawing examinations in the erstwhile Hyderabad State, shifted to Mumbai to complete his diploma course in drawing and painting.

He was the Head of the Department of Lalith Kala in Nutan Vidyalaya in Gulbarga before working as a designer in the Handicrafts Board and doll-making centre in Mumbai.

The painting exhibition of this senior painter will be organised at the Chaitanyamayi Art Gallery in the city from January 25 to 29.

Senior artist and director of the Chaitanyamayi Art Gallery A.S. Patil has sponsored the exhibition to give an exposure to Mr. Sraodes' works of art.
