GULBARGA: A 20-year-old youth, an accused in a murder case, was allegedly chased and stabbed to death by a gang of six in the heart of the city on Tuesday evening.

Superintendent of Police K. Ramachandra Rao who inspected the spot of crime, gave the name of the victim as Roshan, a Nepali youth who was an accused in the murder of advocate Shami Iqbal a few months ago. He said the victim, who was arrested along with three others, was released on bail two months ago. The police pressed a dog squad into service and have identified two of the assailants. Teams have been despatched to arrest them, Dr. Rao said.

He said the police have collected clues about the identity of the assailants from eyewitnesses.

Roshan was the son of an employee of the Gulbarga Kendra of Doordarshan. The police suspect the murder to be the handiwork of a criminal gang. He was followed for several days before Tuesday's attack near a hotel.

In the case of murder of Shami Iqbal, the police had arrested four persons, including Roshan. While Roshan obtained bail two months ago, the three others are still in Gulbarga Central Prison.

Dr. Rao said the police have recovered four weapons from the spot of crime.

The body of Roshan had a deep cut in the neck and several stab wounds.

According to the eyewitness accounts, the assailants chased Roshan for 200 metres, cornered him near the hotel and stabbed him before running away towards Khuba plot.

The police had a tough time controlling the crowd at the spot. Te body of Roshan has been shifted to the Government General Hospital for postmortem.
