Codava council to observe January 26 as `Black Day'

Staff Correspondent

`Accord Constitutional guarantee to the culture of Kodavas'

Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) will observe the Republic Day as "Black Day" in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here, to press for its demands, its secretary general N.U.Nachappa has said.

Observing the Republic Day will be incomplete without granting the demand of homeland for Kodavas, Mr. Nachappa said in a statement here on Tuesday.

Constitutional guarantee

The Government should accord constitutional guarantee to the culture of Kodavas, recognise Kodava homeland and accord primitive tribal status to Kodavas.

The council will organise a "Delhi Chalo" on April 6 and 7. A seminar has been organised on the occasion.

Mr. Nachappa urged the Government to enact a law to give proprietary rights to the holders of "Jamma Malai" in the district. When the Government can give rights to the tribal people living in the forests, why should it refuse rights to the "Jamma Malai" holders?, he asked.
