HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has directed Congress MLAs to fan out to the villages to educate people about the beneficial impact of his Government's irrigation policy. This follows the call given by the 82nd AICC plenary that party leaders must seriously apply themselves to the task of highlighting the programmes and plans of the Government. Both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi, MP, sent a strong message to the party at the concluding session of the plenary not to allow rivals to occupy political space and publicise the good work done by the Government. Taking a cue, the Chief Minister has asked his colleagues to explain to the people the benefits of `Jalayagnam' and to blunt the criticism of the Opposition against it. Responding to his call, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has chalked out a mass campaign in support of projects like `Polavaram' and `Pranahitha-Chevella.' Identifying these projects, the lifelines of both Telangana and coastal regions, the CLP plans to seek people's support for the programme. The CLP plans to counter the opposition of the CPI (M) to the present design of `Polavaram' and the TDP's charge that the Congress was neglecting Telangana projects. The TDP leaders are taking out a `padayatra' in Telangana demanding that the "Pranahitha-Chevella' project be executed immediately. In the case of Polavaram, the CLP plans to question the CPI (M) leaders of Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari districts to come out with convincing reasons for opposing the Government proposals. It will also ask the local CPI (M) cadres to explain their stand.
Agency campaign
Minister for Commercial Taxes K. Ramakrishna will launch a campaign from G. Madugula in Visakhapatnam agency area on January 26 to secure 10 lakh signatures in favour of Polavaram project within the district. This would later be replicated in East and the West Godavari districts. Similarly, to counter the TDP's proposed `padayatra' in Telangana, the CLP will be holding public meetings in Sirpur Kagaznagar (on January 28) and Mancherial (29) to explain the commitment of the Government to the irrigation development of the region.
