NEW DELHI: Two Left parties on Tuesday said Bihar Governor Buta Singh ought to go in the wake of the Supreme Court judgment indicting him in the State Assembly dissolution case. While the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said it would be appropriate for Mr. Singh to step down, the Communist Party of India urged the Government to recall him. In a statement, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau said the problem was not solely of Governors having a political background as the majority judgment pointed out but about the latitude and scope of the powers of the Governor. Further, it reiterated that the wider question of democratic norms regarding the role of the Governor during the formation of a government after an election and precautions to check arbitrariness in the discriminatory powers of the Governor needed to be discussed and decided. Stating that the judgment was along expected lines, CPI general secretary A. B. Bardhan said the Government should immediately recall Mr. Singh from Bihar. "His remaining as Governor there is absolutely untenable.''
