Two doctors penalised for negligence and causing harm to patients

The district consumer forum takes a serious view of the doctors' action

KARIMNAGAR. In a historic judgment, the district consumer forum has imposed a fine of Rs.5 lakhs on two doctors of Karimnagar (Rs. 3 lakh to one and Rs. 2 lakhs to the other) for neglecting medical care and causing harm to patients.

According to the Karimnagar consumers' council here on Tuesday, district consumer forum president B. Rajanna and members imposed a fine of Rs. 3 lakhs on Parusharamulu for causing the death of a patient suffering from tonsils in 1995.

An RTC employee, Muralidhar, had admitted his son Santosh in the hospital. After surgery, the doctor left for Warangal and the patient developed side effects. There was none to attend on the patient and he died.

The father had lodged a complaint with the local police and also the district consumer forum.

The forum after examining the post-mortem report and case sheet imposed fine on the doctor.

Surgery turns futile

The doctor was also asked to pay the fine to the complainant with 9 per cent interest.

In the second case, R. Koteshwar of Nagnuru village on the outskirts of the town underwent sterilisation at a camp organised on January 10, 1998, at the Government Hospital.

He was handed over a certificate of surgery.

Complaint lodged

But after that, he fathered the third child in 2,000 and secured a certificate from the village panchayat.

He lodged a complaint with the district consumer forum.

Forum directive

The forum had imposed a fine of Rs. 2 lakhs on Surendranath, the doctor, and instructed him to pay the amount with 9 per cent interest from the date of incident.
