Enumeration of

wild animals

KADAPA : A scientific enumeration of wild animals is in progress range-wise as part of an attempt to keep track of their number and safeguard them, according to Chief Conservator of Forests P.K. Sarma.

Census of carnivorous animals was done between January 18 and 20 and herbivorous animals were being enumerated from January 23 to 25, he told newsmen at Kodur on Tuesday. Forest areas were extensively toured during the last four months on the Union Government's directions, he said. - Staff Reporter

Four held, red

sanders seized

KADAPA : Forest officials arrested four persons of Y. Kota village in Obulavaripalle mandal on Tuesday on the charge of smuggling red sanders.

N. Seshaiah, who allegedly attempted to smuggle 30 logs of red sanders, escaped when forest officials conducted raids near Vengammabavi in Gundalakona forest area on January 8, Forest Ranger Khader Vali said. The red sanders were seized. Besides him, three of his accomplices -- T. Krishnaiah, P. Subbaiah and Venkatesh -- were nabbed, he said. - Staff Reporter

Honour for V-C

GUNTUR : National Cadet Corps Director General M.C. Bhandari has conferred the honorary rank of `Colonel' in the National Cadet Corps on V. Balamohandas, Vice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University.

In the armed forces, the rank of Colonel of the Regiment is an honour normally conferred upon distinguished and senior officers for a fixed tenure approved by the President.

A release from the university said that Prof. Balamohandas was an NCC Cadet while he was a student of a college in Narasaraopet. - Staff Reporter

Theft in temple

Nellore : Unidentified persons have gained entry into the Ramalayam temple of Rajula Yerraguntapalem village of Sydapuram mandal and took away two tape recorders and other material used for daily `pooja'.

The villagers, who noticed it on Tuesday, lodged a police complaint. - Staff Reporter

Train service revived

HYDERABAD : The Krishna Express (train no.7405-06) is being revived to run between Nizamabad and Tirupati.

The train No.7405 will arrive/depart Secunderabad at 8.40/8.41p.m. and arrive at Nizamabad at 12.25 a.m. In the return direction, train No.7406 will depart Nizamabad at 2 a.m. and arrive/depart Secunderabad at 5.20/06.05 a.m. towards Tirupati, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Nellore : Seven houses were razed to ground and 21 families rendered homeless when fire broke out at Kavalimitta girijan colony on Monday night.

Series of burglaries

in Nizamabad

NIZAMABAD : In a series of burglaries in the town during the last 30 hours, 60 tolas of gold, 10 tolas of silver, cash and consumer durables were taken away.

According to the police, robbers broke into Lakshmi Jewellery at Kumargally and decamped with 50 tolas of gold.

Robbery cases were also reported from Saikrupanagar and Autonagar in the town. - Staff Reporter

Constable dismissed

KARIMNAGAR : Armed reserve (AR) constable T. Surender Singh was dismissed from service for bringing disrepute to the Police Department with his alleged criminal activities, according to a press note issued by Superintendent of Police Devendra Singh Chauhan.

The constable was charged with harassing a college student and trying to molest her on the outskirts of the town in December last. She lodged a complaint with the police. - Staff Reporter

Amalapuram: PAC chairman and senior TDP leader Yanamala Ramakrishnudu on Tuesday inaugurated the statue of former Speaker GMC Balayogi in Bandarulanka village in East Godavari district. Rajahmundry: Music lovers working in the Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills and other cultural organisations have arranged three-day music festival in memory of Veena Musicians Eemani Sankara Sastry, Vasa Krishna Murthy and Ayyagari Someswara Rao from January 26 to 28. In a statement on Tuesday, convenor and medical officer of AP Paper Mills, R. M.Sc. model

entrance test

Kakinada: M.Sc Model entrance test in Biotechnology, Maths, Microbiology, Physics, Biochemistry, Electronics, Chemistry and Human Genetics will be conducted on January 29 on the VS Lakshmi Women's Degree College campus, according to V.Sandhya, Principal. She said students were not able to secure ranks in the competitive examinations owing to lack of proper awareness. She said there was no examination fee .

Woman stabbed

VIZIANAGARAM: Kallepalli Niraja (38), a housewife, was stabbed with a knife allegedly by a couple staying on rent in her house in Korada Veedhi at 9 am on Tuesday. She was admitted to District Headquarters hospital by Rakshak police, according to DSP T. Bhaskara Rao. She was said to be out of danger. The accused couple entered the house while the victim's husband was away. Illicit relationship was said to be the reason, the DSP added. The I-town police launched a search to nab the couple. - Correspondent

e-governance

initiative

VIZIANAGARAM: As a part of e-governance initiatives 15 major panchayats in the district have been selected in the first phase to provide information at the village level. This was disclosed at a workshop on e-panchayat at Zilla Parishad Conference hall on Tuesday by Deputy Director of National Informatics Centre C.S.Prabhudev.

The panchayats are S. Kota, Kothavalasa, Jami, L. Kota, Dharmavaram, Bhogapuram, Nellimarla, Garvidi, Cheepurupalli, Ramabhadrapuram, Gajapathinagaram, Peda Bogila, Kurupam, Kondapalem and Garbham.
