ALAPPUZHA: The token strike called by the organisations of State Government employees and teachers owing allegiance to opposition parties on Tuesday demanding revision of salaries and restoration of dearness allowance affected the functioning of Government offices in the district. The strike was peaceful except for stray incidents of violence. The striking workers organised picketing before important Government offices in the district. They also held protest marches. Some of the gazetted officers also did not report for duties in the district. The district convener of the agitation council V.S. Chandrasekharan said the strike was total in the district and the participation of workers was unprecedented. The NGO union state secretariat member B Anandakkuttan inaugurated the picketing of striking workers before the Alappuzha civil station. The striking workers organised a march from the civil station to the town. Meanwhile, the Kerala Gazetted Officers' Union Alappuzha district president P. Pushparajan in a statement said the striking NGO Union workers attacked two Kerala NGO Association workers Ajayan and Vincent who were working at the Alappuzha sales tax office. They had been admitted to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital.
