BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, is determined to put in place a new work culture and wants that those at the helm of affairs should send a message that the Government means business and corruption will not be tolerated. This was asserted by Mr. Chauhan in an exclusive interview to The Hindu on Monday night. The Chief Minister said he was aware of the huge divide that existed between the Government and the common man. "It is important that we take steps to regain people's faith," he said. He said that people had unfortunately left the entire initiative for development on the Government assuming that it was the Government's responsibility to solve all their problems. There should be concerted efforts to build awareness among the people, he said, asserting that all-round development was not possible without building up a people's movement for development. Mr. Chauhan said people in villages were often ready to join hands and pool in huge funds to welcome their leaders but prefer to remain aloof and back out when it comes to generating even nominal resources to take up odd jobs like cleaning up the community well for safe drinking water. "They think it is their right to welcome their leaders but it is the Government's responsibility to provide them clean drinking water," he said. The Chief Minister said corruption was a serious problem that had seeped into the vitals of our system. Since corruption was rampant, it was important that those sitting on top should set an example of honesty. "Once those occupying the high seats of power become accountable to the public, those down the line would be afraid to indulge in corruption," he pointed out.
