Srikakulam: A meeting held on Tuesday between officials and oustees of the Vamasadhara project to fix the quantum of compensation to be paid for the lands which would be submerged under the Heeramandalam reservoir ended without any agreement being reached. District Collector A. Koteswara Rao, Superintendent of Police A. S. Gurappa, other senior officials and representatives of the oustees were present. The meeting was held in the collectorate. Mr. Rao told the oustees that land acquisition officials fixed a rate of Rs.88,000 an acre for wet lands and Rs.66,000 for other lands. However, by using his discretionary powers, he would enhance the compensation to Rs.1.30 lakhs per acre for wet lands and Rs.90,000 for other lands, Mr.Rao said, adding that if this proposal was agreeable to oustees, he would initiate steps for payment of compensation. "This is the maximum that can be done at my level," Mr. Rao told the oustees. However, the oustees wanted Rs.2 lakhs for wet lands and Rs.1.50 lakhs for others.
