TIRUPUR: With the laying of pipes for the underground drainage scheme and the civil works at sewage treatment plant are in the final legs, the Tirupur sanitation project is all set to take off by end of February. "Though the execution of the project got delayed by a couple of months because of heavy monsoon and floods, we will finish it by February end,'' said Samir Vyas, Managing Director of New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited (NTADCL), which is implementing the Rs. 1,023-crore project. According to him, the laying of pipes to a distance of 118 km in the town for sewage collection was almost over. And it had laid pipes to connect 13,500 households across the town and the Municipality. The construction of the sewage treatment plant at Sarkar Periyapalayam, 10 km from here, with a capacity of treating 15 million litres a day (can be extended up to 30 mld) is underway. The biological treatment system - using the aeration method - at the 13-acre plant will treat sewage and discharge it into the Noyyal River. Of the 52 wards in the Municipality, the project covers only 37 wards. As per the project, all the sewage collected from households will be pumped into the main pumping station, near the Electric Crematorium on the banks of Noyyal, from four places. A collection well is being constructed there. Mr. Vyas said though it involved pumping and maintenance costs, NTADCL, as of now, had no plans to collect user charges.
Deposit amount
The Municipality will provide connections to the households after collecting deposit amount. The local body will fix the deposit amount and the number of connections. NTADCL was formed under public-private partnership to carry out water supply and sanitation project at an outlay of Rs. 1,023 crores. It has successfully commenced the water supply to processing units, Municipality and wayside villages a few months ago. The Municipality is mulling over a plan to cover all the 15 wards that were left out in the scheme through its own financial arrangements.
