MANGALORE: Madrasas do not preach terrorism or promote terrorist activities, said Mirza Ahmed Mehadi, president, State unit of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), here on Tuesday.
Misconceptions
He was addressing a gathering at the inauguration of an awareness campaign organised by IUML to address a "misinformation campaign" against madrasas by certain groups and to set right misconceptions that madrasas are promoting terrorist activities. Mr. Mehadi said that madrasas are "primary schools of peace". They teach people how to live in harmony. IUML is opposed to all types of terrorist activities including "State-sponsored terrorism" that happened in Gujarat some years' ago. He said that there is an international conspiracy to defame madrasas and added that some groups in the country are part of this conspiracy. Mr. Mehadi said that people should unite under IUML to fight against terrorist activities. Madrasas in Dakshina Kannada never indulged in any anti-social activities, he added. Referring to the political developments in the State, he said is it unfortunate that the Janata Dal (Secular) wants to align with such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Cherkalam Abdullah, MLA, Manjeshwar (Kerala), U.H. Ahmed Bava, president, Dakshina Kannada unit of the IUML, Ahmed Jamal, vice-president and C. Ahmed Jamal, secretary of the State unit of IUML, spoke. S. Sulaiman, member of IUML, welcomed the gathering.
