ADILABAD: Cotton farmers held up weighment of cotton at the Adilabad Agriculture Market Comittee (AMC) for five hours on Tuesday demanding that purchase of cotton arriving from Maharashtra be stopped. The weighment resumed at 1 p.m. only after AMC secretary H. Chandraiah promised to suspend purchase of cotton arriving from that State. The farmers were upset over the fact the cotton from Adilabad was being rejected by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) on the grounds of high moisture content. However, the cotton arriving from Maharashtra was being purchased through middlemen against the prescribed rules. The agitating farmers relented on the condition that no cotton from Maharashtra would be purchased from Wednesday.
