HYDERABAD: "What is needed is to evolve an appropriate framework to wrest maximum benefits out of international trade and investment," said Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister C. Rangarajan at the 14th convocation of the B.R. Ambedkar Open University on Tuesday. Mr. Rangarajan who was speaking of the opportunities and risks that globalisation presented in today's world, said that India must reform the trade system to reap benefits of international trade and take domestic measures to realize the full potential of globalisation. Commending the role that BRAOU has played in distance learning, he pointed out that it was the first Open University to be started in India. He emphasised the importance of distance learning, by saying, "Distance learning has democratised higher education and made it inclusive. It has reached out to people who would otherwise have remained outside the pale of higher education".
Certificates presented
Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde presented graduate, postgraduate, M.Phil, Ph.D degrees, certificates and diplomas to the students. Medals were awarded to those who stood first in the various fields in distance mode. Mr. Shinde conferred the Doctor of Letters on Jnanpith awardee and former member of Rajya Sabha, C. Narayan Reddy. Among the students who came to receive degrees were five inmates of Cherlapally jail, and an inmate of the jail in Rajahmundry.
