Three killed in Geeta Colony slum fire

NEW DELHI: Three persons - two men and a woman - were killed and four injured when fired destroyed 350 houses in a slum cluster on the banks of Yamuna in Geeta Colony locality in East Delhi late on Tuesday night, fire department officials said.

The blaze, reported at around 10 p.m., was of medium intensity, they said.

Twenty-five fire tenders were rushed to the spot to extinguish the blaze, the officials said.

Jal Board workers

NEW DELHI: A large number of Delhi Jal Board workers held a protest demonstration outside the headquarters at Jhandewalan on Tuesday to seek implementation of their demands and to exhort the Board to finds ways and means to overcome Delhi's water problems. They also criticised the plans to privatise the Board and the two-year extension given to Member (Water) Subhash Chandra Phull, who they said, was instrumental in the privatisation process.

The protest meeting started at 11 a.m. and witnessed the participation of hundreds of workers. Raising their voice against corruption, the protestors charged that the Member (Water) was taking the Board towards privatisation and that only the multinational companies would stand to gain from this.

Man held on murder charge

NEW DELHI: A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the North-East Delhi police for allegedly killing a 35-year-old woman at Nand Nagri in North-East Delhi on January 15. The accused was having a live-in relationship with the woman and was apparently angry with her because she was having affairs with other men.On January 20, the police had received a call claiming that foul smell was emanating from a rented accommodation at DDA Market in Nand Nagri. The police reached the spot and broke open the accommodation only to find a highly decomposed body of a woman, later identified as Geeta.

Juvenile held for stealing motorcycles

NEW DELHI: A 15-year-old schoolboy has been arrested by the Operation Cell of the North-West Delhi police on charges of stealing motorcycles for joyrides. The accused had apparently stolen more than 20 motorcycles. The police said there was a spurt in motorcycle thefts in Rohini and Prashant Vihar in the recent past.

Murder mystery solved

NEW DELHI: The 22-year-old brother-in-law of an eight-year-old girl whose body was found in a gutter at Patel Nagar in West Delhi on Monday has been arrested by the West Delhi police on charges of killing her.

According to the police, the accused, Salamat, a resident of Kathputli Colony in Patel Nagar, had strangulated the girl, Sabina, in a fit of rage
