BANTWAL: Sunitha Padmanabha of Narikombu constituency and Usman Karopady of Kanyana constituency from the Congress were elected president and vice-president, respectively, of the Bantwal Taluk Panchayat for the first term of 20 months here on Wednesday. The post of the president had been reserved for a woman from the BCM A category and that of the vice-president for the general category. While Ms. Padmanabha defeated Devaki of the Bharatiya Janata Party representing the Peruvai constituency by three votes, Mr. Karopady defeated N. Subbanna Shetty by a similar margin. The Congress has 18 members in the 33-seat council with the rest are from the BJP. Prabhakar Sharma, Assistant Commissioner, Mangalore subdivision, conducted the elections.
BJP wins in Sullia
Suvarnini representing Panja constituency and A.S. Vijay Kumar of Jalsuru constituency of the BJP were elected unopposed president and vice-president of the Sullia Taluk Panchayat at the elections conducted here on Wednesday. The post of the president had been reserved for a woman from the general category and that of the vice-president for a candidate from the general category. The results were a foregone conclusion as the BJP has bagged 10 of the 13 seats in the taluk panchayat. The Congress has three members. Subraya Kamath, Assistant Commissioner, Puttur subdivision, conducted the elections. Ms. Suvarnini sought the cooperation of all concerned in providing a clean and transparent administration during her tenure.
Belthangady
Valambra Narayana Gowda of Mithabagilu constituency and Chandu L. of Hosangady constituency from the Janata Dal (Secular) were unanimously elected president and vice-president of the Belthangady taluk panchayat at the elections held on Tuesday. The post of the president had been reserved for a candidate from the general category and that of the vice-president for a Scheduled Caste candidate. While Janata Dal (S) has 12 members in the 24-member house, the BJP has eight members and the Congress four.
Nominations
The BJP and Congress did not file nominations for either posts, paving the way for the election of Mr. Gowda and Mr. Chandu, who are first time taluk panchayat members. Mr. Kamath conducted the elections. Belthangady Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Mallikarjuna Swamy was present.
