dated January 28, 1956: "Portugal must quit Goa"

(There being no issue of the paper dated January 27)

In a Republic Day broadcast to the nation, the President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, has called upon the people of India to dedicate themselves once again to the great cause of establishing a welfare State in the country. The President expressed regret that all their appeals and suggestions for a peaceful solution of the problem of Goa had hitherto had no effect on the Portuguese Government and that the authorities there had resorted to force to suppress the natural aspirations of the people to enjoy the bracing air of freedom. He added: "Let me hope that even now Portugal will see the light of reason and agree to cede Goa to India to whom, geographically, historically and culturally, it belongs. On the auspicious occasion of the sixth anniversary of our Republic, let me once again offer my greetings and good wishes to my countrymen. On this day of rejoicing, we look at ourselves and our country and feel, as it were, the process of growth and development through which India has been passing."
