Schoolchildren steal the show

GULBARGA: The day belonged to children from different schools who stole the limelight at the Republic Day celebrations organised at Chandrasekhar Patil stadium here on Thursday.

The schoolchildren in colourful attire gave a breathtaking performance, overshadowing the near-perfect march past by the police and paramilitary forces, the NCC, the Home Guards and the Scouts and Guides. Over 10,000 children were divided into seven groups. Their performance captivated the audience.

Over 600 children, mostly girls, brought alive the State anthem "Jaya Bharata Tanu Jathe, Jayahe Karnataka Mathe... " It was followed by another troupe of 500 girls drawn from Government Girls High School and Government SC And ST Girls' Residential School in the city, to dance to "Vande Mataram" rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. Dressed in bright yellow saris, the girls kept the jam-packed stadium spellbound with their performance.

Children drawn from Nutan Vidyalaya and Rotary School performed a bhangra, which was followed by 650 children dancing to Iqbal's "Sare Jahan Se Achcha... "

About 600 students from Pragnya School danced to "Onde Onde Karnataka Onde.." by Dara Bendre while 600 children from Sharanabsaveshwar Residential Public School in Rajasthani attire gave a "Kolata" performance.

Students of the Government Certified School took part in a mass drill that marked the end of the show. Earlier, Primary and Secondary Education Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy unfurled the national flag and received the guard of honour.
