A destination for exhibitions

Kochi has become a favourite spot for organising exhibitions. The city has been hosting exhibitions of various kinds in the past. The recent ones include bamboo fest, IT exhibition and handicrafts expo.

The bamboo festival focussed on the various uses of bamboo. There were wide varieties of articles made of bamboo on display. These included the conventional ones like mats, tools and musical instruments. Some of the novel items included bamboo pen and pickles made of fresh bamboo shoots.

The festival was aimed at reviving the traditional crafts and to highlight local customs. It also showcased capabilities and export potential of craftspeople, according to the organisers.

The IT exhibition was organised as part of the meeting of entrepreneurs in the IT education field. The show has become an annual event in which prominent companies and groups engaged in the IT and IT enabled services take part. It was an opportunity for the common man to see the latest tools of IT at close range. Computer stalls at the exhibition came out with special offers to woo customers.

The handicrafts exhibition organised by Kairali, the State-owned handicrafts unit in Kochi, featured an array of exhibits from across the country. The exhibition had to be extended owing to popular demand, according to Kareem, manager of the Kochi showroom. The exhibits included those from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Among the different kinds of items on display were Kolhapuri dress materials, palm leaf paintings from Orissa, wall hangings from Maharashtra, crystal paintings from Tamil Nadu.
