Steps promised to check child begging

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Instances of small children being forced into begging are on the increase in cities and the Government will take strong steps to check the menace, Minister for Environment and Forests A. Sujanapal has said.

He was speaking after flagging off a vehicle `yatra' organised by an Aluva-based NGO, Janaseva Sisubhavan, from Gandhi Park here as part of its efforts to create awareness about child begging.

The NGO presented a memorandum to the Minister pointing out that though strong laws were there to prevent child begging, these were more observed in the breach. It urged the Minister to implement these laws and also protect all street-children.
