THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Several passenger-friendly initiatives are being undertaken in Thiruvananthapuram Division as part of the efforts to improve performance in "touch and feel" areas in 2006, Divisional Railway Manager S. Vijayakumaran has said. A big thrust was being given to improving passenger information systems through touch-screen and coach guidance facilities and train arrival display systems as well as by introducing new telephone enquiry numbers. He was speaking after unfurling the National Flag and taking the salute at the Republic Day celebrations organised at the Railway Divisional Office here on Thursday. The Railway Protection Force presented a colourful march-past. Mr. Vijayakumaran said doubling between C and D cabins at Ernakulam would be completed this year, and that between Ernakulam and Mulanthuruthy, next year. Doubling on the Kayankulam-Haripad-Kayankulam-Chengannur stretch was in progress. Electrification would be through to Thiruvananthapuram by March-April. The past year was a very significant one for the division, with passenger earnings going up by 15.9 per cent and freight earnings by 12 per cent, the DRM said. The passenger earnings touched Rs.220 crores in 2005, while Rs.65 crores was earned through freight transport.
