COLOURFUL SHOW: Schoolchildren presenting a cultural programme during the Republic Day celebrations at the Nehru Grounds in Hubli on Thursday.
DHARWAD: S.R. Morey, Minister for Municipal Administration, has urged the youth to acquaint themselves with the Constitution. Speaking after hoisting the tricolour at the R.N. Shetty Stadium here on Thursday, the Minister said the role of the youth is crucial in the development of the country. They should discharge their duties honestly. He said, "We should realise our individual and collective responsibilities and resolve to contribute to the development of the nation by performing our duties in a responsible manner." He explained about the initiatives taken to develop the twin cities. Referring to the improvement in the drinking water supply system, Mr. Morey said if people take precautions and adopt water conservation techniques it is possible to supply water daily in the next two years.
Oath
Earlier, the Minister received the guard of honour and administered oath to members of the Grama Nairmalya Andolana. State-level award winners Madhav Gudi, Shivanand Tarlagatti, Basalingaiah Hiremath and others were felicitated. Mr Morey distributed certificates to NCC cadets who represented the State in the Republic Day celebrations of 2005. The Minister also symbolically distributed yellow ration cards to the people of Tegur. Geeta Patil, President of the Dharwad Zilla Panchayat; Basayya Gangadharmath, Vice-President; M.S. Srikar, Deputy Commissioner; Narayan Nadamani, Police Commissioner, and B. Shrikantappa, Superintendent of Police, participated in the function. A procession of tableaux by various government departments and cultural programmes by schoolchildren were the highlights of the celebrations. Speaking after hoisting the national flag, V.R. Yaradakeri, Tahsildar of Hubli underscored the need for understanding the basic principles of the Constitution and acting according to them. Speaking after hoisting the national flag at the Nehru Ground, Pralhad Joshi, MP, said, "Our endeavour should be to reach the benefits of development works to every citizen of the country." The former Minister A.M. Hindasgeri urged the people to follow the principles of harmony and self-sufficiency. The former MP I.G. Sanadi, Basavaraj Nalatwad, Keladimath and M.L. Manjunath were present. Schoolchildren presented cultural programmes.
Exhibition
A mobile exhibition on environment protection and pollution control was held. At the programmes organised by the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation in Hubli and Dharwad, Mayor Hanumanthappa Betageri and Deputy Mayor Santhosh Hirekerur hoisted the tricolour. Officials of the municipal corporation participated in the celebrations.
