Guwahati: Assam Governor Lt. Gen. (retd.) Ajai Singh said on Thursday that the State Government was determined to put down all kinds of terrorist violence with a firm hand. The security of the citizens and their well-being were the utmost concerns of the Government. In his Republic Day speech at the Judge's Field here, he said all insurgent outfits should give up violence and join the mainstream to work for peace and development. "It is high time the insurgent groups heed the people's mandate, abjure violence and come forward to the negotiating table." Due to the intensive anti-insurgency operations under the Unified Command, the law and order situation had shown a discernible improvement in the recent years. "The most noticeable phenomenon among all sections of society is the diminishing fear psychosis and mass support for peace." He expressed the hope that because of the "unprecedented peace and prosperity prevailing in the last five years," the State would witness a peaceful, free and fair conduct of elections. The celebrations passed off peacefully with no reports of violence from any part of the State. Apart from issuing a call with three other militant outfits, the United Liberation Front of Asom engineered a series of blasts in the run-up to the celebrations.
